 Student Voice

The Maryland Center for School Safety (MCSS) offers a way for students to participate in the school safety discussion.

Student Advocate for School Safety Program (SASS)

The Maryland Center for School Safety (MCSS) Student Advocate for School Safety Program (SASS) was created to ensure that Maryland youth are given the opportunity to provide feedback and recommendations regarding school safety issues that are pertinent to them. SASS members are energized and enthusiastic students who want to positively influence school safety efforts throughout the State of Maryland.

Program Goal

To have as an MCSS resource, a group of students who represent the diversity of Maryland student voices and can serve as advocates for school safety.

Students will:

  • Represent the perspective of their region by closely interacting with the student member of the Advisory Board to the Subcabinet of the Maryland Center for School Safety.

  • Provide insight on the student perspective related to school safety topics.

  • Expand their knowledge about school safety topics through collaboration with MCSS staff.

  • Serve as a local advocate for school safety.

Program Expectations

SASS members are expected to:

  • Conduct themselves in a manner that positively represents MCSS and the program.

  • Receive and respond to occasional (2-4 times a month) email communications from MCSS staff related to opportunities to engage in activities.

  • Volunteer to participate in at least one engagement activity during the year.
